Ownership Passport

Not Just a Certificate. A Permanent Identity.

An Ownership Passport is a persistent, living record that follows an item through every owner, every transfer, and every event — for the entire life of the item.

Certificate vs Passport

Two Different Things. Both Essential.

People often use 'certificate' and 'passport' interchangeably. They are not the same. Understanding the difference is the foundation of how Ownich works.

Digital Ownership Certificate

Point-in-time attestation

A Digital Ownership Certificate is a cryptographically signed attestation of a specific fact at a specific moment — who owned an item, on a specific date, with specific evidence attached.

  • Captures a single moment in time
  • Signed and sealed at the moment of issuance
  • Cannot be altered after signing
  • Proves a fact: this person owned this item on this date
  • Analogous to a birth certificate or a notarised deed

Think of it like a notarised document — it proves something was true at a specific moment, signed by a trusted authority.

Ownership Passport

Persistent living record

An Ownership Passport is the persistent, living record that contains all certificates, all transfers, all evidence, and all events for a single item — from first registration to the present day.

  • Grows with every ownership change and event
  • Contains the full chain of certificates over time
  • Belongs to the item, not to any single owner
  • Persists through every transfer — it never resets
  • Analogous to a physical passport — it travels with the item

Think of it like a passport — it belongs to the item, not the person. Every owner adds a stamp. The history is permanent and cumulative.

What it is

A Persistent Digital Record for Physical Possessions

Ownich is digital ownership infrastructure that gives physical items a persistent, verifiable identity, ownership history and provenance record. Its Ownership Passport records the item's ownership, provenance, certificates, evidence and transfers throughout its lifecycle.

Where a certificate answers the question 'who owned this item on this date?', the Ownership Passport answers the question 'what is the complete history of this item, from the beginning?'

The Passport is not owned by any single person. It is attached to the item. When ownership transfers, the Passport transfers with it — carrying the full history of every previous owner, every certificate issued, and every piece of evidence ever attached.

What it contains

Inside an Ownership Passport

Item Identity Record

The permanent, immutable record of what the item is — make, model, serial number, category, and any unique identifiers. Set at first registration and never altered.

Certificate Chain

Every Digital Ownership Certificate ever issued for this item, in chronological order. Each certificate is a signed attestation of ownership at a specific moment. The chain is append-only — certificates are never removed.

Ownership Timeline

A chronological record of every owner, with the date each ownership began and ended. Ownership periods are derived from the certificate chain and cannot be fabricated or backdated.

Transfer History

Every ownership transfer recorded with date, parties (masked to initials for privacy), and the agreed transfer price where disclosed. Each transfer is atomic — it cannot be partially written.

Evidence Vault

All photos, receipts, appraisal reports, insurance documents, and supporting evidence ever uploaded by any owner — cryptographically linked to the certificate that was current at the time of upload.

Verification Events

Every time the Passport was independently verified — by a buyer, insurer, dealer, or auction house — recorded with a timestamp. The verification log is public and cannot be altered.

Lifecycle

How a Passport Grows Over Time

An Ownership Passport is created at the moment of first registration and grows with every event in the item's life. Here is how a typical item's Passport evolves.

1
Day 1

First Registration

The item is registered by its first owner. The Passport is created. The first Digital Ownership Certificate is issued and signed. Item identity is recorded permanently.

2
Ongoing

Evidence Added

The owner uploads a purchase receipt, photos, and an appraisal report. Each piece of evidence is cryptographically linked to the current certificate and appended to the Evidence Vault.

3
Transfer

First Ownership Transfer

The item is sold. The current owner initiates a transfer. The buyer accepts. The Passport is updated atomically — the new owner is recorded, the previous owner is appended to the Ownership Timeline, and a new certificate is issued.

4
Ongoing

New Owner Adds Evidence

The new owner uploads their own receipt and photos. The Passport grows. The previous owner's evidence remains permanently attached — it cannot be removed.

5
Transfer

Second Ownership Transfer

The item changes hands again. The Passport records the third owner. The full history — both previous owners, all evidence, all certificates — remains intact and publicly verifiable.

6
Always

Publicly Verifiable

At any point in the item's life, anyone can scan the QR code and see the full Passport — current owner, complete ownership timeline, all certificates, and verification status. No account needed.

Why it matters

What Changes When an Item Has a Passport

Resale value increases

Items with a complete, verifiable Ownership Passport command higher prices on secondary markets. Buyers pay a premium for certainty — and a Passport provides it.

Insurance claims are faster

Insurers can verify ownership, item identity, and condition at the time of loss independently — without relying on paper receipts that may be lost or disputed.

Fraud is eliminated

A Passport cannot be fabricated. The certificate chain is cryptographically signed and append-only. A stolen item cannot be given a clean history — the Passport travels with the item, not the thief.

Estate and inheritance is clear

Beneficiaries receive verified ownership records alongside the physical item. The Passport proves what was owned, when, and by whom — without relying on paper documents that may be disputed.

Provenance is automatic

For collectors, dealers, and auction houses, provenance is everything. A Passport builds provenance automatically — every event is recorded, ordered, and permanently attached to the item.

The item outlives its owners

A physical item may pass through dozens of owners over decades. The Passport persists through all of them — creating a permanent, verifiable history that increases in value over time.
